Hey Chilean dweller, I'm sure you're a nice girl and all but I found this particular post very clueless.

"The Russian government poisons people and spies. Hugo Chavez is a COMPLETE wack job. Iran wants to nuke the US. In Sudan they are massacring people by the thousands. But I have absolutely nothing against Russians, Venezuelans, Iranians, and Sudanese people. My personal beliefs are that you should only judge the individual person because making assumptions will backfire on you every time."

This statement above is as simplistic as can be and is no excuse for what the US government has been doing since its inception to other people.
Venezuela's Chavez might be a nut, but he is a nut that actually cares for his people and speaks the truth about the US instead of sticking to hypocritical PC and BS. You have no proof that Iran wants to nuke the US - but there is plenty of proof that the US harmed Iran (Iran/Contras history.. economic sanctions that affect the most vulernable) Have you put yourself in the shoes of Iran? They have every right to be on the defensive when a baseless propaganda campaign led by the US is all the rage lately. The point is, these countries that you mention are not traveling thousands of miles to invade, destroy and loot another country, whereas the US has done this, SEVERAL times. Their problems lie within THEIR borders, withint THEIR disputed lands, not within foreign countries.

Also, let's not be so naive about separating the responsability of the American citizens from the American government. What is the reason Bush is in office now if not for Americans who not only voted for him but have KEPT HIM IN OFFICE? If "third world countries" have in the past been able to bring down governments and kicked out foreign invaders (India is an example) why haven't the American people rebelled against a government that LIED to them, invaded two countries, killed thousands of people, destroyed and contaminated lands and has bankrupted the federal reserve and is making its citizens for generations to come pay for it - literally?
What have the Democrats done against foreign kidnappings and torture? What have they done against the looting of taxpayers' money? And why have the American people, with all the resources that they have and all the power that they have compared to others, stood by and ALLOWED this to happen?

Let's not be so naive. What the US has done to the countries its invaded is indeed criminal and American citizen's apathy and/or support in such crimes are a large part of the problem. This is not to say that Americans should be harmed, but it is to say that people need to fess up to their roles as citizens and their truth.

group think is bad...and he's grouped you into the bush administration.

maybe if you had more time to get to know him, not in a supermercado check-out line or something, you could change his mind. but for now, try not to stew because you are a good person...

I visited friends in the UK back in 2005 and it was a little like you describe. In person people aren't as vocal, but as soon as I said I was from the US the attitude would change and I would get an icy reception. This is the UK where their government was just as guilty as ours (at the time, in my opinion).

People would always ask me first if I was from Canada and after a while I wanted to say yes just to not be hated. But I didn't because I am American and as much as I dislike the current government I still feel love and loyalty for my country and the people in it.

People are the same everywhere given the same opportunities. There are loonies here that are just as hateful as the guy you ran into. And I hate it too.

There will always be extremists - unfortunately not every person can be reasoned with because their views aren't based in reality. I know how frustrated you must have felt at the end of that "chat". I used to be a political science major. I can become very passionate about politics. I try really hard to work toward the positive (I'm a BIG SUPPORTER of Barack Obama) and try not to give any of my energy to the negative. It's not easy though. And I can only imagine how frustrating it must be for an American living abroad, especially in Latin America, with the International climate what it is.
