S. got a new job! Today was his birthday, and he had a job interview. It was at 7pm close to a mall so I went with him and hung out at the mall while he tried to impress a potential future boss…and it worked!

I am SO excited for the possibilities that come along with this new job for him. More money isn’t even that big a deal for me. The fact that we are probably moving out of Santiago within the next 2-6 months is the best part of everything!

One of the possible relocations would be to a city in the north of Chile, Antofagasta. The city in and of itself isn’t great, but the climate would be nice and we’d be close to beaches and water!

Our other possible relocation would be to Osorno, a tiny town in the south of Chile, where it rains a lot but is near tons of beautiful landscapes.

I don’t really care where we go, I just can’t wait to get away!

I’m so very happy right now :)

  1. As fun as photoshop is you should ditch it – the raw photos are beautiful!Congratulations to both you and your hubby – for the birthday and new job. Every new adventure isn't in the least bit colourful (or memorable) without the occassional slip up and if boredom will be your worst complaint, as Chileno contests, you still have your exciting blog! hahaxo

  2. Antofagasta is extremely dangerous and you would be bored to insanity in Osorno.

I’m not exaggerating. For all my complaints about Santiago it at least has the most culture in Chile, and relative safety. I definitely feared for my life in Antofagasta, there is literally ONE restaurant worth going to and the food there is mediocre. There is not a single movie theater in Osorno and it is rapidly developing a smog problem.

The locations offered show that your husband is on a pretty low rung in his new job.

  3. Do you have to be so negative Chileno???

The salary offered would beg to differ from your statement that he is on “a pretty low run in his new job.” He was handpicked for this job. They recruited him from what he’s doing now and offered a more than sufficient amount to tempt him away. His interview was with the owner of the construction company.

He asked to be relocated out of Santiago, and those are the two new construction sites about to be started that coincide with when he can leave his old job.

I’m thrilled to get out of Santiago. I’ve been to both Osorno and Antofagasta and have no problem with either. It’s not necessary to look at the negatives of every situation. I’m keeping my fingers crossed for Osorno…weekends in Bariloche, Validivia, and Chiloe sound pretty good to me. And in Antofagasta I would be thrilled to have a warmer climate. I’m a Floridian.

In reality, the only thing I want is to get away from my in-laws.

I’m thrilled, so don’t be an asshole. It’s totally unnecessary.

  4. Chileno is MEAN! do you know this person?
I don´t know you too well but you sound very excited and I trust that you know enough about Chile to know whether you should be excited or not!
Congrats from me anyway, a change of scenery will be an adventure! And congrats to S, I know you guys were waiting on this job and success is oh so sweet! Yay!
    xxxxxx
PS thanks for your compliment on my photo! I actually studied photography at uni but I am lazy when it comes to nice pics for my blog, but your blog inspires me to work on my photos!

  8. Congratulations to S. on the job. Sorry it is so low rung though. My husband is low rung too. Oh wait…does low rung mean they pay him well for a job that he is qualified for and is indispensable?
Oh never mind…I know what low rung is…someone who goes around judging everything and everyone else.

  9. osorno is, indeed, a bit of a hole..an agricultural cow-town. even locals bitch about the place. on the other hand, the countryside around the place is lejos my favourite part of the country. lago puyehue is gorgeous (and the hot springs complex is pretty cool as well), you’re just a couple of hours drive to puerto varas, my favourite town in the south, chiloe isn’t too far, getting to bariloche is easy…i could live quite happily down there (well, not actually in osorno but in the area). my girlf needs a bit more stimulation though…which is why we’re in valpo. you have to have a car, otherwise you really will be bored to insanity.

never been to antofagasta but i’ve not heard great things about it…go south..!

anyway, congrats to your hub for getting a new job.

  10. Congratulations to your husband on the new job!!I can understand wanting to get away from in-laws. You two need to have your own life and your own space. My husband's family never comes by un-announced, but we got in a fight not too long ago about how often people call him. It's not that I minded him talking to his family, but I minded the constant interruptions all evening. But we compromised and now he doesn't answer the phone every time it rings and I'm more patient about interruptions.

  11. Hi- I recently became addicted to your blog and read way too much of it in one sitting! I really enjoy your photos and your accounts of life in Chile. I laughed out loud about the gringa mistakes (I think that was on your other blog). Anyway, I’d love to see photos from your wedding and read the story of that!

  12. Kyle I don't doubt that you're happy and I never expressed that doubt. Critiquing the way you describe your happiness is grist for the mill – so you can really get the message out there like you are intent on doing. Rachel "can't grasp subtle wit and sarcasm" because I was one-upping Kyle's husband's joke about having the kids fend for themselves, turning it on him. Joking, but too subtle for her. At least she doesn't try to sound intelligent. Anyway, Amy Boring, I consider Kyle "friendly competition" and if you were to subpoena our email exchanges I could prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt. A can't compete with you in your school-yard name calling simply because that "Chile Relleno" bruiser really put me down for the count. Ouch. Anyway, Kyle's got fantastic photos and I don't compete on that score at all. I point and shoot and don't claim to be doing anything else. Amy Boring, if you wanna create hullabaloo out of nothing, then don't be such a, well, boor. I'd suggest you take some cues from the master: me. That said, even a Master makes mistakes and I didn't mean to end up being so hurtful to Kyle. Sorry Kyle.

  13. “Chileno” just say stupid things -maybe he is a stupid too- The most dangerous place in Chile is Santiago. Period. Both places are better places more than Santiago, i bet my hands. I know it, i live in Viña del Mar, and i hate Santiago. Sometimes i think a big plane should let fall a big Bomb over it, and then grow green all over that place. It would be a great gift for Chile (“Chileno must be over there too”)

  14. “i bet my hands” that anonymous coward say intelligent thing all night long, and read blond blog for words only.

Basically, Kyle, some of your *positive* posts read a lot like the last few pages of the script for that movie Election. Self-parody. Your welcome for giving you a chance to make it sound less pathetic. Those are honestly two of the worst imaginable cities in Chile, which is saying a lot.

Sure we all wish someone would bomb Santiago, or at least the building with the highest concentration of those pesky human rights lawyers, bonus points if I’m in there too. But you gotta acknowledge that Santiago has a vibrant theater scene and enough movie theaters to temporarily stave off boredom without having to make a weekend trip out of it. And you can avoid violent crime within more than a 5-block radius (try that in Antofagasta).

Iquique would be better, I think. But really you should go to Osorno and delve into the pastoral beauty of cuico hicks. Or convince your husband that if newborn babies can be steeled by neglect he can at least handle conjugal weekend visits to Valdivia.

  15. Don’t you just love people who think they are smart, yet can’t grasp subtle wit and sarcasm. They deal in blunt and ugly—and blunt and ugly is all they know and can ever possibly offer.

  16. Chileno, whether you choose to believe it or not, I’m happy. Extremely happy, in fact.

I’m fulfilled by the people I surround myself with, the things I entertain myself with and the person that I am. And I’ll feel that way here, or in the U.S. or in Osorno or Antofagasta or in Antartica.

If you choose to see negativity in all things around you, that’s fine. But, please, don’t bring it here.

  17. Oh I see. Mr. chile relleno is your “competition” with his stretched out distorted blog header. No sweat K you photography rivals his point and shoot capabilities.

The winner of todays Asshat competition goes to you chile relleno you wear it well with a heaping scoop of brown sauce.
