We live near a Lider, which is a really tiny, crappy grocery store without a lot of variety in products. It also only has like 6 cash registers for all the gazillions of people that shop there every day so the lines are usually at least 10 minutes long if not more. Annoying.

So the other day we discovered that our favorite grocery store here, Jumbo, delivers! S. started browsing through the website to decide what he wanted to order. Upon seeing all the different flavored milks and many kinds of yogurts he shouted out, “I’m going to fill the fridge with lactose!”

WHO SAYS THAT?!?

I laughed so hard I almost cried. Sorry if this isn’t funny to anybody else, but my husband cracks me up.

*updated: I should probably add, he said this in Spanish. No language barrier here, just S. being weird. :)

  1. Hahaha, well I think it’s funny, but that could be because I’ve seen him polish off a liter of leche cultivada in about an hour. And I’m going to look into this whole Jumbo delivery business! Although I’m pretty sure they charge me more for living on the “wrong” side of Vicuna Mackenna…

  2. That is funny. I totally know what you mean though… I am married to a frenchman. Every day there is a funny situation that arises from the language barrier.

    I love it :-)

  3. HAhaha one of my favorite things is when Ro says something that to him is perfectly right, but just sounds so weird!! One time we were at the library in the US and we walked out and he said,”look at that girl’s panties! They are so cute!!!”
I busted out laughing, it was great. I had no idea that “panties” here are leggings or tights. I’m just glad nobody heard him!!

  4. Word. Vuko’s seco para la lactosa también. Yoghurt, milk, cheese, leche cultivada-he also polishes off a liter quickly. His favorite flavour is chirimoya (cherimoya in English) I personally try to sort of avoid lactose products(except cheese-I’m addicted), because I don’t trust the food industry at all.

  5. oh yeah and Jumbo the delivery thing is pretty cool. We did it once in Valpo, they delivered our groceries from the Viña Jumbo and it was free if we spent like $50 dollars or more.

  6. that is funny! what is it with Latinos and lactose products? Marcos eats yougurt on his breakfast, yougurt after lunch AND dinner, and cause I know he loves it so much I often bring him home liquid youghurt if I am shopping alone… I got him one last night, it was a “sabor nuevo” and I asked him if he had tried it before and he says he buys it at work! So he has liquid youghurt for morning tea AS WELL!

  7. Okay, I thought that was funny when I read it and now, I am thinking is there a word in Spanish for dairy? Or some equivalent? Of course, here in Canada they print in French and English, so no help there.

  8. I think they say like “productos lácteos”.

Speaking of food words, have you guys noticed there’s no good word for “nuts”? Because I was taught “nuts” are “nueces”, but Vuko told me “nueces” refers specifically to walnuts. So appartently they say “frutos secos” when talking about nuts. And I imagine that term includes “dry fruits”.

  9. Ok- this sounds like the sort of thing my husband would say, but in English. I think it’s just because he’s a little weird… but I love him.

Do you have any good “lost in translation”moments? My favorite is when my friend’s French husband was begging her to get out of bed and he said “Bue sweetie, it’s such a beautiful day! The sky is blue, the birds a burping!” :)
