mom and old lady II small

Ha! These two pictures slay me. My mom just sat down on a bench next to the old lady and they both ended up looking the exact same way at the exact same time. Funny! These are just outtakes but I blogged some pictures from a session I did with my beautiful mother while she was here. Check it out at my photography blog.

Happy 4th of July. It’s my favorite holiday, but I’m not able to celebrate this year. I’m sick and doing my best to not get tonsillitis like I have every winter that I’ve ever lived in Santiago. Last time the doctor threatened me and said that if I got it again I’d have to get my tonsils out…and there is no way I’m getting surgery in a hospital here. No way.

So I’m resting, taking care of myself and doing everything I can to get better. I went to the doctor today and he gave me some medicine to help me now, and then also wrote me a prescription for tonsillitis medicine…just in case. Doesn’t that sound ominous?

  1. Hi. I have tonsillitis and a sinus infection to boot. I totally feel for you. I have had no voice since Tuesday. Ugh. Feel better and great pics.

  5. You wouldn’t feel safe having your tonsils removed in Chile? I thought it had the best doctors in Latin America?

  6. Chile would be the first place I’d have my tonsils out – their clinics (well some of them of course) and surgeons (again some of them) RULE. One operation and one baby there and I’m DREADING having medical care elsewhere. Honestly.

(Have you noticed I’ve found a way through the Great Fire Wall of China to comment?!)

    Miss you lots

  7. Dude, suck. Sorry you’re sick. Hope you get well soon. I imagine you’re going to get better and you won’t need your tonsils taken out!!

And about Chilean hospitals…mmm…I don’t like hospitals to begin with, even in the States… I understand how you feel Kyle. I don’t know if I’d be operated on here if I could choose to go to the States instead. If I did need surgery, I’d definitely investigate a bit first. I’m sure there are plenty of competent Chilean doctors. It’s the facilities that scare me a bit. There are plenty of hospitals that seem to have good machines and everything, but I’ve heard the rate of people who die in Chilean hospitals due to machine failure is relatively high. That’s understandable for public hospitals, because the machines are used so much that they don’t always have time for routine maintenance. But I guess even in the nice Chilean hospitals the rate of people who die due to machine failure is high. A friend of Vuko’s was considering doing his Electronic Engineering thesis on a related topic, and told us this. He ended up picking a different topic, because he said the changes that the hospitals would need to make to be safer would so expensive that he didn’t see them doing it in the near future. So he chose an easier topic. It freaked me out a bit to hear this. It made me think twice about Chilean hospitals.

  9. Oh, I remember going through this in Mexico. I got tonsillitis every year too. My doctor said the same thing.

I moved soon after, back to Canada, so I never did find out if it’d had happened again.

I do hope you’ll be better soon. Gets lots of rest.
