Yes, I said staycation, not vacation. And no, it wasn’t as lame as it sounded. :) My mom has been to Chile like ten thousand times now, so we didn’t really need to revisit all the touristy stuff. Instead we just spent a great week together, enjoying each other’s company! In the interest of saving time, and my health (I’m sick and desperately need a nap, but can’t sleep yet because I’m awaiting the announcement of the birth of Angelina’s twins so I can post it as soon as it happens), I’ll just list off a few of the highlights of our trip.

  • Climbing the dreaded hilltain three times.
  • Eating at two of the best restaurants in Santiago, Akarana and Zanzibar.
  • Going to Starbucks every day.
  • Walking all over Santiago.
  • Cooking together.
  • A wonderful party with all my awesome gringa friends. They found out where I inherited my tendency to overshare from. ;)
  • Shopping for a new desk chair.
  • Wearing new clothes every day, dressing up and doing our makeup together.
  • Eating gringo candy that you can find here.
  • Pedicures
  • Talking.
  • And talking some more.
  • And talking even more.

And now for some pictures. Get ready because there are a LOT.

My mom is a goddess. She brought me so many different types of salad dressings, sauces and things with flavor that you cannot find in Chile! Oh, and not to mention about 50 pounds of candy. The gringa party mentioned above was a gringo candy themed party. We made quick work of everything!

This is pretty much what S.’s face looked like for the entire time my mom was here. :)

Mom bought new pants. It was a good occasion for a photo shoot.

Pedicures and my mom brought me sandals that matched hers…and they are SO comfy. I can already tell they’ll be my go-to flip flops in the summertime.

  2. after hearing it on the Daily Show world edition I had wanted to use the ridiculous term “staycation” but forgot! Thanks for reminding me. I too miss Brianna’s dressing and Cheez-its terribly!

  5. The pics are really beautiful, you and your mom look so happy together… and I’m glad S also has a cameo, since I think we’d yet to meet him ;)

    Fned.

P.S. I too am scouting the internet about Angelina’s babies, but that’s only because I’m a gossip whore. I just hope we get the hear about it since right now all the news we’re getting is about about Ingrid Betancourt finally being free (glad she is too, 6 years is way too much time to be held hostage)…

  8. Great photos! Thanks for sharing your mom’s visit with us. She looks incredibly young. Then again, so do you. Or maybe I’m just old…. sigh.

  9. Lovely pics. It’s actually great to see people who have fun in Chile (not that I particularly enjoy it).

Your mum does look really young! You’re more like sisters. Your previous post was really moving.

It’s so funny to see how much people miss silly things like candy. Same here. Being away I just die for leche cultivada, I like it with instant oats (avena instantánea). Yeah, I know it sounds gross, great and convenient after the gym.

But, amazingly, once I was sent so many pots of manjar (the massive ones) and I had it with toast for weeks and weeks, but in the end I got sick of it. I eventually switched to Nutella (before I thought it was fake manjar).

In your post you said “Eating gringo candy that you can find here.“, what would that be? Or did you mean “gringo candy that you can’t find here?

  11. It looks like your mom had a good stay. I wish someone would come visit me and bring me sauces, dressings, and candy!!! Flavor is one thing I can’t wait to have when I go back.
SO do you have plans for tomorrow for the 4th?? I’m definitely going to miss the bbqs and parades. Theres nothing like sitting on the side of the road while little kids go back and forth getting candy!! Especially when you can sneak a few pieces from them!

  16. Oh man! Is that Buffalo Wild Wings sauce I see in that picture? It sure does look like it. I brought back a bottle myself in January.

So glad you had a wonderful visit. Thanks for sharing all the great pics!
