Our tickets are booked and S. and I are headed to the U.S. for Christmas! Here are just a few of the things I’m looking forward to for this trip:

  • Hugging my family
  • Catching up with old friends
  • Roller coasters at Busch Gardens amusement park
  • Chili’s boneless buffalo wings
  • Spending all day (actually I’ll probably need a few full days)at Barnes and Nobles reading photography books
  • Lying on the beach
  • Swimming in the Gulf of Mexico
  • Buying clothes that are actually in style, reasonably priced and decent quality
  • And then returning them, hassle free if I so choose
  • Taking pictures of my owncountry, which isn’t something I get to do often
  • Long walks at night on Bayshore
  • Visiting my alma mater
  • Stocking up on Cheezits and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups
  • Shots
  • Driving places (not after taking shots)
  • Making conversation with random strangers in line at the supermarket
  • Line dancing and listening to country music radio stations
  • Actually traveling with my husband rather than away from him
  • Road trips
  • Wendy’s frosties
  • Doing a third photo session with one of the first families that ever hired me as their photographer
  • A surprise party for a family member

I just hope we have time to fit it all in. It’s been a long time since I’ve been back (I think I last went in May or June of 2007) so the list of things to do, places to go and people to see just gets longer every time!

What are your favorite things to do when you back that you just can’t do (or eat in some cases, hahaha) in Chile?

  1. You’re not coming anywhere near Indiana perchance, are you?

And Busch Gardens! Hey! My family went to the Virgina one a couple times when we lived in that state fr 4 years. I still remember the roller coaster that shot out over the water.

  3. PQ, actually if I visit MI I might be swinging through Indiana! I’ll e-mail you once we have our vacation plans all figured out.

TD, Cheezits are my weakness, they’re SO good aren’t they?!?

  4. i miss conversations with strangers. last week someone on the street AND someone in the supermarket ignored me outright when i approached them.

mm this is a fun topic. books, crazy richard’s peanut butter, some indian food stuff i can’t find here, like mustard seeds, non-UHT milk, lox and bagels, my parents.

  5. I miss lots of food…different ethnic foods, varieties of cheeses, good milk, all the prepared foods and little gourmet treats from Trader Joe’s and Whole Foods, farmers markets where the food is actually local/organic (as opposed to the Vega where it’s just as processed and chemical-y as in supermarkets).

Non-food things: driving my car with the windows down and the radio up, knowing how to do everything without it being hard, shopping, Coffee Bean/Starbucks/Peets (ok, that’s kind of food), the fog rolling over the hills, easily accessible and cheap books in English. Friends and family, but that’s obvious. Although I do really miss being able to pick up my phone and just chat with people without it being expensive.

And now I want to catch the next flight back to California. Thanks, Kyle.

  6. OH!! I;m so jealous! Ro and I were trying so hard to get to the US for Xmas :( Now it looks like we will be there in January. I can’t wait for Barnes and Noble and country music either!! I think the restaurant I miss the most in the US is Buffalo Wild Wings! Nothing like something spicy with ranch!! Shots? You mean alcohol right? I miss that too!! Whenever I try to take a shot here everyone acts like I am committing suicide or something! They are wimps here! Ro’s friends freak out over drink the bottle’s cap full of alcohol! I hope you have a fun Xmas!
Hey my husband wants to have a party with all the bloggers and boyfriend/husband/whatevers! We should plan something soon. I was also thinking of having a Thanksgiving bash of some kind.

  8. I'm so excited for you! I am headed back to IN for Christmas, but that probably isn't a surprise. I've managed to go back often, but I still miss things.

There are so many things I agree with you on – B&N, clothes, pb cups, frosties, driving. And oh the random conversation. I miss it.

    I'm also looking foward to:
going out by myself at night usually to bum around at a Target, bagels, buffalo wild wings, panera bread, USamercian 'authentic' mexican, variety of beer flavors especially the winter and holiday blends, snow, christmas cookies, martini bars and my dog.

Crap! Now I can't wait either!!

  9. When I visit my parents I usually do the nostalgia thing and visit at least one place I used to hang out at. I also try to see my best friend, who still lives there.

Not to add to your itinerary or anything, but if you do swing through Kansas or Missouri, let me know. I’d love to meet you.

  10. Chinese roast duck.
    Organic fresh milk.
    Heinz Baked Beans.
    Cheddar cheese from Cheddar.

I think it’s pretty much only food that I really miss when I’m away from England. Friends and family just go without saying.

  11. I miss shopping! My mom called me the other day and told me she got a sale at Naturlizer and that she got four pairs for just $45 dollars. That would never happen here.
Recently, two of my work pants have had buttoms fall of or zippers break. It’s not like I’m getting fat, I just think the expiration date on these clothes here is a lot different thant he US.
Even the things I bought in Argentina and already starting to show wear that would take months to appear on something I bought in the US.
