Hey everybody. Marcelo wants/needs a math tutor. He is struggling big time and so far he’s only on the basics, but he has to take a math class every semester to graduate and if he fails now he’s just going to get farther and farther behind.

Right now he’s just on fractions and percentages and very basic equations. S. and people who work with Marcelo have been helping him at lunch time, but none of them are tutors. They just say, “Here’s how you do it.” But they can’t explain the reasons behind why, in order to give him an actual understanding of the concept rather than an equation to memorize.

We’re looking for someone to do this as a volunteer. And it would have to be on a Saturday afternoon or anytime during Sunday since Marcelo works days and is at class nights. We have a few possibilities of people who might be able to help, but none are sure bets yet so I wanted to post here to find out if any math geniuses who read this blog would be interested in doing a good deed. :)

I’ll pay you with a free photo session if you want! Please send an email to: kylehepp at gmail dot com if you’re interested.

Thanks so much!

  1. Oh man, I would totally do this too, I helped my future mother in law pass her college algebra class. :| Sorry I’m a billion miles away though! Miss you!

  2. I know you would, you’re a freaking evil math/science genius!!!

Unfortunately the billion miles away thing is a slight problem. That and the fact that Marcelo only speaks Spanish. :P

  4. Anonymous, for whoever ends up being Marcelo’s tutor, I’ll do a photo session for you, or you and your significant other, or of your kid, or whoever, gratis :)

  5. Sorry, I didn’t know you are a photographer.

I have tutored kids in math before but unfortunately I don’t live in Santiago. You’re thinking of face-to-face tutoring, am I right?

  6. Oh, sorry, guess that would explain the confusion!

Yeah, we’re hoping to find someone in Santiago to do face to face tutoring…

  7. Sorry for my ignorance, but secondary school doesn’t prepare its students with so basic level of maths? Don’t they achieve the enough knowlege to face even a “tecnicatura”? I know nothing about education system in Chile. Maybe you’d be so kind to explain it.Thank you

  8. It’s not ignorance to now know the school system of another country!

No, public schools here are for the most, horrendous. There is one famous public school where many of Chile’s leaders attended, but that is hands down, the exception to the rule. Public schools, much like in the U.S. are funded locally. Marcelo is from a poor neighborhood, meaning the school in that neighborhood was really bad.

He’s also been out of school for I think 5 years. He graduated from a “technical high school,” meaning not even as a good as a regular public high school, and started working when he was 18. So I think he needs some refreshing. :)

  9. Hey there, I got your post on my blog about needing a math tutor. It sounds like a great thing that you and your husband are doing, but as it turns out I am leaving Chile in about 6 weeks to start returning to the States…so between preparing to leave and then actually moving on, I don’t think that I will be able to help out. But good luck with everything!

Puyuhuapi is in the south, on the Carretera Austral, somewhere between Coyhaique and Chaiten. It’s lovely down there, but I think that you would have to wait till next year to go, as I’ve been told that it’s really only worth it during the summer when the weather is enjoyable.

    Take care!

  10. Kyle, how much would it cost to have a university student tutor him?

  11. I’m not sure Michelle. Since I haven’t been able to find a volunteer yet, that’s my next step. I’m going to put something up on Needish.com today to find out.

  12. Take a look at this site: http://www.nectar.ca. They provide education software for mathematics and home licenses are $24.95
