Today I got ran over by  a car. I was jogging and he ran a red light while I was crossing Ricardo Lyon. Just like Emily!…kind of. She got stitches the other week in her chin when she fell off her bike  riding to work but I just had to go and one up  her so I got hit by a car.

Like I said, I was crossing Ricardo Lyon on Pocuro (finishing up mile 3 of 4 from my jog). I had  a green walk sign and a car ran a red light and hit me pretty hard. According to the police, the impact caused me to go flying over 20 meters.

I blacked out  upon impact. Actually I don’t remember anything but seeing the green light and crossing. The man in the car took me to Hospital Salvador. But they put me in a room with someone with swine flu. The mom of the guy who hit me called S. because she found his number in m iTouch (which is now totally destroyed :( WAHHH, how will I live without it?!?!). Anyways, he came and took me right away to Clinica Santa Maria, which is where we have a convenio through our insurance. I still don’t remember any of this. The first thing I remember is asking everyone if I really got run over? Like, really, FOR REAL?!?! The first thing I asked S. was, “Is this real?” And then as a test to see if it was for real, for real...I asked him if I could blog about it. :P

Right now my body hurts everywhere. I feel like I just got run over…because I did. I got 8 stitches in my leg and have some nasty bruises elsewhere plus a mild concussion. Really I feel very lucky. I could have died. Easily. The guy hit me going pretty fast and ran me over. I really could have kicked the bucket. But I didn’t because I was born under a lucky star, a higher power might be watching out for me, and I have loooooooots of good karma coming my way :)

I’m at the Clinica Santa Maria overnight so don’t expect much blog posting from me in the next couple of days, but just wanted to give you guys an update. I’m pretty damn banged up, but don’t worry about me, I’ll be fine. :)

PS. Check out Papito’s Corner (the dog icon, top right on the home page) for pictures of her from today…because that’s what I do when I’m sad.

  1. Very glad to hear you're ok! It's unbelievable to think you could be hit so hard and not break anything! Maybe it's time to buy a lottery ticket?!

  6. Chile just has to make sure that you're battered and worn enough to face anything when you travel the world, apparently. Chile just couldn't let any other country beat them in terms of giving you crazy stories to tell your kids. I'm seriously still in shock, so glad that you're okay!

  7. Holy crap Kyle! I'm glad you're okay. At least the guy brought you to the hospital…although putting you in a room with someone with the swine flu wasn't the most brilliant idea! Sheesh. I'm going to be much more careful while crossing the street now. Chilean drivers are craaaaaazy.

  10. En serio?!! So glad you're OK. Being able to blog coherently after getting a concussion bodes well for recovery!

I knew Clinica Santa Maria was nice, but I had no idea they had internet for patients!

It would be interesting to hear S.'s side of the story….what was going through his head, what the whole hospital process was like, etc.

    Hang in there!

  17. Oh my gosh, Kyle!! I am so sorry to hear your news. How incredibly scary. I'm so glad that you are doing okay and that the driver was responsible enough to get you to the hospital. You are in my thoughts. Take care and heal quickly.

  18. That's terrible. I've only seen people get run over. I had a near miss where I ended up pushed up against a car that was just going to run a stale red on avda. Salvador. Then his girlfriend/wife started yelling. I didn't stick around to find out if she was yelling at him for being an idiot or at me for nearly getting killed. I just got the eff out of there.

    Hope you feel better.

  19. WHOA! I can't believe that happened to you. What happens next? Is the guy going to be prosecuted? Oh Kyle, I'm glad you weren't more seriously injured and I hope you get well soon.

  20. I'm so glad you are ok!! GEEZ! Makes you wonder how often people are hit by cars. S's bro's girlfriend was hit by a car in Santiago just a few weeks ago. She was pretty bruised up but ok. My cousin was walking a few weeks ago and was hit by a drunk driver- he is in pretty bad shape (like a halo around his waist) but recovering. I'll be sure to look both ways 3 times whenever I'm walking around the city. I'm a huge jaywalker and really need to watch that in cities like Santiago. I'll say a little prayer for you.

  25. Oh my!!!!!
    That just sucks.
Drivers in this city should be more aware that there are pedestrians who also have rights!!!
I hope you know who hit you and sue his ass off.
    I’m so sorry!!!!
Hope you get better soon. Have your nana fix you hearty meals when you get home so you’re all set for your trip.
Poor S., he must have had the scare of his life.

  27. I'm so sorry to hear you've been hurt, but you sound like you're doing as well as can be expected… So glad the guy who hit you had the thought to bring you to the hospital instead of freaking out and fleeing the scene… I hope you're out of the hospital and back on your feet as soon as possible… Out of solidarity I got suckerpunched on the street by my house Friday night and ended up with a black eye, chipped front tooth and a brand new tetanus shot thanks to the admitting nurse at the emergency room– not as bold as being run over by a car but I wasn't able to arrange that…

  28. Eeeek! That's so scary, Kyle. I wish I could send you some flowers or something to brighten your stay. I know S is there glued to you taking care of you though.

If they offer you pain meds, take them, seriously. You'll probably be sore for several days. I hate being spaced out, but I hate pain worse.

I guess someone doesn't want you leaving Chile. ;) That or maybe it's time to leave! :)

  29. Kyle, I am so sorry to hear about you! Thank goodness you ARE alive as you are right it could have been far worse. Shame we can't lynch the guy, but we don't want to be spitefull…we need more goodness in this world. Take care and do let yourself mend. Yes, you finally made the decision to leave and then…well, strange. Be well, huge hug. Kristi

  33. Wow! Sorry to hear that! It sounds so weird to tell someone they were “lucky” in a situation like this… what's lucky about that??? But I'm glad you'll heal… and hope this doesn't set you back on your plans for your trip! Hey… maybe the guy's got a good insurance plan and there you go… trip paid for! (oh… sorry, we're not in Kansas anymore… but get those ruby slipper clicking just in case! Good luck!!

  48. Man, that totally sucks!!! I was hit by a car once and it hurt like nothing I've ever felt before (I couldn't walk for a week) but I was lucky and didn't get it as bad as you. You were definitely born under a lucky star to survive something like that. I wish you a speedy and painless (though I know it won't be) recovery. And hopefully that jerk will pay more attention next time (though I know that probably won't happen either!)
