I can’t say I’m always the biggest fan of Santiago street style, but admittedly, it’s growing on me. :)

I went out with some friends for a little photography expedition a few weeks ago on a Sunday afternoon and this is what we got.

I love these pictures less for the actual style and more for the personality of the people in the photos. At one point a guy watching approached, and said condescendingly, “I’m a photographer, and taking pictures into the sun means you’re just getting black silhouettes.” He clearly thought he was being smooth and was going to flirt with the poor little baby tourist gringas with a camera.

Resisting the urge to lay the smack down and hit him over the head with my new, very large, very non-amateur camera, I responded, “Don’t worry, I’m metering for the subjects faces, and over-exposing the background…but I can pull it down a stop in Lightroom in post-processing.” He slunk away with his tail between his legs. But, everyone else that we photographed that day was fun to talk to. I sort of like the idea of walking around Santiago just asking people if I can take their picture. It’s a good way to connect.

  1. Great photos! I love visiting those candid 'snapped on the street' style blogs, it's interesting to see what trends and styles are popular everywhere from Beirut to Buenos Aires.

  3. I actually think that Chilean teenagers look awesome all the time and I wish that I could have looked as cool when I was 16. Unfortunately, now I'm a little too old to pull off neon mini skirts with patterned tights and converse sneakers…. at least on a daily basis. :)

  4. I LOVE those photos. You're right, there's so much personality. Big think sweaters will always be Chilean to me. Oscar has like 5.

  7. Fabulous shots!!! Reminds me a bit of street fashion in Buenos Aires. My favorite is the chica with the bike. She has such a personality. I love that you put that guy in his place. Did you respond to him in Spanish? High five!

  9. Damn, that last picture looks exactly what the hip and clueless wear in San Francisco… Actually, the girl may as well be the drummer in the last band I was in, although she (the drummer) wasn't particularly clueless…

  13. I've always wanted to do a Sartorialist-type piece on Buenos Aires or Santiago. Your post is great–you really captured the Chilean sense of style.

My favorite photo is the woman with the bike. Can I be her friend?
