Yesterday I wrote the post about how I got ran over by a guy who ran a red light while I was out jogging.  I was totally delusional while I wrote it.

I don’t know how I did that. This post has taken me all day long to write, bit by bit. I’m in too much pain to sit up for long at all. And then the act of going from laying down to sitting up or vice versa, requires total assitance. I also don’t really remember writing that blog post, nor do I fully remember Emily coming to visit me or my lovely former bride Rafa passing by either. I used to remember them being there, I know I do. So I’m a little frustrated that things seem to be fading quickly from my short term memory.

Although, I have to acknowledge that this accident couldn’t have come at a better time. With S. having no job and me having no weddings this weekend we’re good to go. Because let’s face it — S. isn’t the best bedside nurse ever. He’s not exactly known for his patience. This time around, fortunately he’s doing a great job. Menos mal! “Honey, stop being so selfish! I just got run over by an effing car!” isn’t really an argument I wish to have anytime soon.

Papito seems to know something’s up. She’s not allowed to jump on me, which isn’t something we frown upon in this household under normal circumstances. And I screamed and scared the crap out of her the one time that she did jump up. Now she’s just giving me a wide berth and isn’t being her normally cuddly self. Which is fine, because I’m so bruised that her normal cuddly self would probably hurt me.  Even just coughing hurts me. I feel like I ran the half marathon 17 times, carrying a 215 pound man on my back while someone ran next to me beating me with sticks. That doesn’t even begin to describe how sore I am right now.

So I’m home from the hospital now just recovering slowly. I still can’t believe I got freaking RAN OVER!!!!!!!!!!!!! But just wanted to let you all know that I’m doing ok. Thank you so much for your well wishes and comments and emails. I’m so grateful and feel extremely uplifted by all of your support.

And just when I thought I’d have nothing exciting to say about the rest of my time in Chile…look at the lengths I am willing to go to, just to make sure I have an interesting story to blog about for you guys! :P

S.’s co-worker thinks this is a sign that we need to leave Chile ASAP. Maybe this country is trying to tell me something. I’ve had near brushes with death too many times here, I’m not allowed to leave alive?  With the assault, would-be rape, various robberies, I’m starting  wonder if my number is up in Chile! Good thing we’re leaving soon!

Alright, I’m going to go lay down again. I can’t sit up for this long, I hurt. I hurt SO BAD.

  1. Feel better, babe. I'm glad you're leaving soon too — no sense in pressing your luck! Please watch lots of Scrubs and eat industrial quantities of Sahne Nuss ice cream. Love you.

  4. I too am hoping your memory recovers soon (and not just because I don't want to hear about the damn dog obstacle course again, promise!). I'm glad Papito's giving you some space to heal, although I do feel sorry for her…she's probably very worried about her mommy and can't understand why you don't seem to agree that her jumping on your face and kissing you would make it better.

Although I agree you have had really shit luck here, I think maybe the universe isn't trying to tell you to leave Chile, it just doesn't think you should run a marathon!

  5. I'm so glad you are okay! What a CRAZY CRAZY experience! Even if you feel delusional, you didn't lose your great writing abilities. You make perfect sense :) I hope you recover soon – we'll keep you in our thoughts & prayers!

  7. Oh Kyle, poor you! I can't begin to imagine how sore you must be.

Your post on SWPB moved me so much this evening, I so admire you and S – going travelling, living your dreams. And, yes, the accident may well be a blessing in disguise – a painful, but ultimately rewarding, one. In fact, I have no doubt about that.

Get well soon, lovely lady x

  8. Did you guys find out who this guy was who hit you? Did he leave a registro in the hospital? Are you all going to do a denuncia? Oscar was asking, his family was worried for you. Oscar's dad works at Hospital Salvador and if you need him to get any information about this guy or talk to people for you let us know. Oscar's going to email seba about it.

  9. Ouch! I feel like a total wuss for whining about how much my feet hurt after spending a day in platforms. I'll send some feel-good vibes your way. Hang in there!

  10. Carrie, really? There is such a thing as Sahne Nuss ice-cream? Kyle has been holding out on me. She has exposed me to Sahne Nuss candy bars, but not the ice-cream. I can't wait to try it next time I come to Chile (whenever that will be)

  11. Kyle, rest up. That is a direct order from your mother. Funny all day long my body was really sore and achy for no apparent reason. I think I was just having sympathy pains from so many thousand miles away. Am so glad it's not time to play that Shakira song (or was is Brittany?)

  12. Oops, I meant Britney.

  13. Wow…as I read your first post I thought to myself how is one even able to write “I was run over by a car TODAY”???? I was really worried at first but you sounded really giddy especially with all the :) s I saw. It was surreal reading it and started wondering if you were actually ran over or just slightly hit. Based on the description in this post of how you feel it definitely sounds like you were run over. Email me if you need a doctor or opinions on a specialist if needed- S's Dad is there (you met him) and is a very good Dr (General Practitioner) and I'm sure would help out any way he can. I hope you feel better soon!

  16. You can be run over by a car anywhere in the world, but Santiago is particularly dangerous.

Yesterday a woman turning left with her car at the green light honked furiously at the pedestrians who were crossing. She was furious that they were cutting her path when SHE HAS THE GREEN LIGHT. No notion in her brain that the light of the pedestrian were synchronized with hers, since they are going in the same direction.

  22. I couldn't even imagine what it must be like to be hit by a car. All I can say is that I'm happy my near misses have been misses.

I hope you rest up and feel better!

  23. Gosh, I have vivid memories of eating Sahne Nuss ice cream with Kyle in Santiago… I know it wasn't just a happy dream…

  24. I hope they gave you some good painkillers! I know personally how much pain can suck, so if you ever want to bitch about it to someone, I am all ears. Hope you feel better soon and, again, I'm happy you are still alive!

  25. I was in South America for a few months last year and I was surprised I survived. The drivers are insane. The roads are lethal. The one accident I was personally involved in was when a compact car hit the massive coche-cama bus I was in, so that wasn't too dangerous, but still… I could tell that a bad accident was only a matter of time. I wonder what the difference is? The roads just seem safer in the U.S.
