When I got hit, they bandaged up my wounds, and somehow my skin had an allergic reaction to the tape that they used — that in turn caused a bacterial infection in my throat, which turned into a severe allergic reaction which sent me to the emergency room a couple times. Last week, after countless tests — when I went in on Thursday they didn’t even know where to poke me because both my arms were so black and blue — they finally got to the root of the problem and now I’m on antibiotics to treat the problem. I feel better already and the doctor said I should be good to go by tomorrow. I’m SO relieved. I’ve never had a baby or anything even remotely that painful, but I’ve broken a few bones (in the past, not now), I’ve been hit by a car, I’ve had stitches, I’ve been poked in the eye, I once landed on my head doing a back tuck, all kinds of crap — and this is easily the most miserable experience of my life. All last week at night I would wake up screaming bloody murder because I literally wanted to scratch my eyeballs out. Have you ever felt like your pupils itch and you were going to claw your eyes out for real? Because let me tell you, it’s not a good feeling.

There’s a photo under the jump, so honestly, keep reading only if you’re not easily grossed out.

Please excuse the poor photo quality, S. took this with his point and shoot. And please excuse my fat rolls. Three weeks of total inactivity, almost no walking has meant I’m about 3 kilos fatter than normal, yuuuuuck. I mean, isn’t it enough that I got ran over and then had to suffer with this stupid allergic reaction…now I have to get fat on top of it all!?? :P

Thank goodness that I’m finally feeling better. Today was the first bit of relief I’ve had since last Saturday and tomorrow should be even better. I’m HAPPY!!!!!!!!!!!!

  1. Oooooooh, that looks so painful. I'm glad you are at least beginning to feel a little relief. Have you taken any oatmeal bathes? That is supposed to relieve itching for poison ivy and the like. Your picture makes me want to rush right down and start applying cold compresses to you. Get well soon.

  2. I can't believe you're apologizing for the quality of your rash pick… such a professional!

My darling, Kyle, I'm so sorry you're going through this. Get well soon! And then the heck out of Chile :) You need a vacay.

  3. Cheers to your happiness!!! But, my gosh your poor skin. Maybe some aloe would help with the itchiness? Keep on smiling love, that's all you can do at this point!

  4. Damn, that's quite a rash… I hate how these developments always make me feel justified for avoiding doctors… I feel you on the itching eyes, tho… Long ago when I had some bad habits I managed to shred my corneas; I've been wearing hard contact lenses since I was twelve and when you don't sleep for days on end and then crash in the middle of the day wearing them, well, it's bad… Eventually the doctors said I was going to go blind if I didn't shape up and I was stuck wearing sunglasses inside all the time because the light hurt… They burned all the time but I couldn't do anything about it… Everything's fine now, of course, as I imagine it will be for you soon…

  5. My goodness!! Girl! You're in for a looooooooooong break from the ER!!!!!

So glad you're healing now and feeling better already.. I have really sensitive skin and sometimes my legs get so dry I literally scratch my skin off.. yuck (tmi, I know, sorry!)… anyway, just to tell you I know how incredibly horrible it is to want to cut off your limb just to stop the freaking itching sensation!! Glad the meds are working and just think, soon you'll be thousands of miles away and this will all be a horrible horrible memory.

    Courage madame!

  6. Glad to hear that you're starting to feel better – and thank goodness they've discovered the root cause so you'll not suffer for much longer. It looks so painful!

  7. Kyle – I've followed your blog(s) for a long time and not really into making comments. But, OMG!!! have you been thru a scary situation!!! The allergic reaction sounds miserably horrific!! I am a nurse in the US, and it seems so scary to me for you to be experience all of this trauma in a foreign country. Hope you are being well cared for and on the way to a speed recovery. By the way, what fat rolls? The “weight” will fall off as soon as you are up and moving. Most of it is probably a major fluid shift as your body is doing all it can to protect itself. Drink lots of fluid, get well and you will be back to your amazing self soon.

  8. It always feels like the itchiness is coming from inside me so I don't think any oatmeal bathes would help. Feeling less desperate today so hopefully tomorrow will be even better. :)

  12. No worries on the TMI, I am glad you can empathize. It really is the worst feeling!!!

  13. YES, I can't wait for the meds to be really working and have this all behind me!

  14. Hey Kayla, thanks for coming out of the woodwork to leave a comment on this one, I appreciate it :)

It has been a little scary being in a foreign country, but I'm glad that here we are “rich” and have the best possible insurance so can go to the best possible hospitals. I think if we were to go anywhere else I would be terrified.

And glad to know that it's a fluid shift, not just me piling on the pounds! I think it's actually kind of cool the way the body protects itself!

Thanks again for the well wishes!!!
