I LOVE Chile!

HA! I bet long time blog readers never thought they’d see those words in their screen.

But seriously, I have a whole new appreciation for my adopted country. I am never too proud to admit when I’m wrong so I’ll just start by saying this — Chile is WAY more efficient and developed than I had ever thought. I love that the transportation system more or less works.

And the lines, oh the orderly lines these Chileans are capable of making! I once wrote something like, ” lines aren’t really a Chilean forte,” and compared to the US or Norway that still rings true. However, now that we’ve seen the madness that is Italy or the rudeness that is France, I would have to consider Chilean society nice and polite and orderly by comparison.

What else do I now appreciate about Chile/Chileans? Their hygiene! They shower regularly! They use deodorant! Oh how I love the Chileans!

I’m even happy that I’ve lived in Santiago and been robbed and assaulted scared shitless enough times to become a slightly hardened version of myself who can travel through Europe without getting pickpocketed or anything. Not even once!

LOL, I really can’t believe I’m writing this either but I’m seriously euphoric to be going back and I think it’s affecting the chemicals in my brain.

There are always going to be things I don’t like about Chile. It hasn’t been easy for me to live here and I still stand by my previous criticisms as valid. I just don’t think that in the future I’ll be as tough on Chile. Because honestly, it’s my home and there’s nowhere else in the world I’d rather be living right now.

  3. Good to hear you appreciate Chile so much now. Being an Expat since 7 years I have seen many people complain about their new temporary “home countries” but funny enough they usually complain louder when they move back to where they grew up.. ;)

AND summer is coming to Chile yayyyyyy

  4. Aren't those ah hah! moments worth it? I love it when I have one. You're right. Chile is surprisingly more efficient than some countries. I always thought that i could live in Germany, but then the last time I was in Germany I found myself feeling trapped by all the rules, rules, rules that everyone seemed to know but me. In a way, I sort of revel in a little chaos. It makes life interesting. And as far as chaos is concerned Chile's in surprisingly tame, if that makes sense.

  5. I totally know what you mean. As soon as you leave Chile, you start to appreciate so many things about it, some of which you never even realized before. Let me tell you, after living in Chile so long, once you finally leave for good, you are going to miss it with all your heart. After living there for a year and a half and then coming back to life in Canada, all I want to do is go back and I miss everything about it. It's great to have these eye opening moments which will definitely help with the tough Chilean times and help you realize what a great country it really is. I agree with Sara, a little chaos makes life interesting. After coming back to live in such a structured society, I really miss all that chaos, excitement, and stimulation that is Chile, especially Santiago. Never a dull moment!

  6. You are so cute. NEVER EVER let Oscar see this post. Haha :)

I guess that's how I feel about the US after all this time. I LOVE my home country now so much.

And I miss Chile a little sometimes, too. But I'm glad you've found a new appreciation. Are you thinking about longterm a little bit now? Or are you two headed to Norway? :)

  7. you're so right about the pickpocketing thing.. Chile gave you the weapons to never been make a fool out of you… I thnik that's something Chile gave to every citizen of this country…

I don't know if you understand my idea…

  8. Hi Kyle.
Wow, shocking! I guess that means you will be there in December when Alberto and I (and Jack and Sarah, our kids) come to visit. We will have to hook up at Starbucks (the kids are already complete devotees).

  9. You sound like me in my last blog entry. Where finally I'm getting USED to Chile and I realize, hey you aren't so bad after all!! I mean, it's certainly NO California and GOD KNOWS I miss me some ocean waves, but alas, I've been to so many other cities and Santiago? By far one of the best places to live. I can imagine that smaller cities in Chile are just as great.
So are you back? Can we meet soon? I feel like I've met your entire social circuit and all that's left is YOU!! Crazy that we've been in touch since before I arrived and now it's been almost three months since then! If you're back, welcome home!

  10. LOL you're mad. I'm going to remind you of this post in 3 months time when you're trying to jog in the smog, or when they cover your (cooked veg) salad in mayo, or when they make you wait in line for 8 hours for a bit of paper that tells you to come back tomorrow!

Glad you're pleased to be home!

  11. Haha, no worries Flo! Honestly I've always felt that Chile was my home though. It's just a home that I haven't always necessarily loved :)

  12. Andre, I think I would probably find things to complain about…and love….no matter where in the world I am! There is definitely no such thing as a perfect country.

  13. Yeah, I totally get what you're saying. Chile's chaos can be fun, not always, but it can be. And you're right, it's definitely on the low end of the scale as far as chaos in Latin America goes!

  14. Never a dull moment, that's for sure! I try hard not to miss where I came from no matter where I am though, and appreciate the here and now. Not always easy!

  15. LOL, Amanda, if Oscar sees this post I doubt he'd even believe that it was written by me.

And honestly after seeing Europe, not only did I appreciate Chile more, but I appreciated the U.S. more too. Being back in NYC was a WOAH moment. There really is no placein the world like it.

  20. Leaving really does make you appreciate it! I felt that way when I came back to Ecuador from Japan. And Chile really is a nice country. I feel that everytime I go there to visit from here or another underdeveloped country. But then I go to Japan and feel like I jumped 50 years into the future. I didn't know you were robbed in Chile!! When did that happen? After my husband got robbed by 4 men with guns in Quito the other day and reading about all the people that have been murdered here in the last month, we are ready to get the hell out of here. We are just tired of having to live paranoid.
