We have a wedding in Chiloe next weekend so we are heading down a little early to explore, since I’ve never been to the area! I am beyond excited, this wedding is going to be kick ass. All the guests (including us) will be camping out that night after the reception because the whole shebang is being held on a tiny little island where only 60 people live!

Anyway, I wanted to take advantage of this blog and ask for recommendations on any specific things we should see. We only have two days before we go to the wedding island. We’re staying on Castro, so anywhere you can get to from there — tell me!

And I also wanted to make the announcement on here as well that we live on Monday and will be with limited internet access until the following Tuesday. My clients know we’re going, but I just wanted to say it again — if you need something urgently, email me before Monday!

  2. Chiloe is the land of magic in Chile. Black Magic, and… lesser black magic, but in a Chilean way, not in a terrifying way xD You could take a quick look at this: http://www.mitologiachilota.cl/english.php?tema… I know it´s not a specific phisical spot to look, but the atmosphere of the island is important to us, Chileans. Your husband can tell you about this.
I´ve never been there, so I have no specific places to suggest, but remember the words Pincoya, Caleuche, and Trauco. Also, there are some strange houses called Palafitos, you should see them xD. Ah, and you should try the curanto, mmmm!

  3. chiloe… yayyyy! i've traveled there 4 times now!! im working up my frequent island traveler points it seems…

i love chiloe and have everything and nothing to recommend all at once. my biggest recommendation would be : wander! jeje.

but in case you really do want an opinion, despite the fact its small enough you'd probably discover all the big things yourselves anyway…

of course the stilt houses, i liked exploring the different islands by ferry and bus (but youll probably get some of that for the wedding portion), there is a funky shaped museum that i've never seen open but maybe by now it is, taste test the flavored liqours!, great place to shop for knit stuff in the handicraft fair down the hill near the water, i'm not huge on churches but they are pretty there. … but all in all you can't go wrong by just wandering.

well, you can if you've forgotten your umbrella! (i dunno if it rains much this time of year actually)

my favorite restaurant in castro has been one on the far left corner of the main plaza (far left if youre coming from the terminal)..when you first enter the restaurant there is like a boat that forms the bar and such. anyway, great hot chocolate too.

once i went to this awesome outdoor mythology museum that i have no idea of the name, where it was (not in castro), etc. it was like a huge garden with little creatures set up and such. if you hear something that sounds like that haha.

    have an awesome trip!

  4. I'm so jealous…I LOVE CHILOE! The last time I was there, I went to a gorgeous little island called Mechuque. There are tons of palafitos, and everyone says hi to you when they pass you! It's not the quickest trip from Castro (I hitchhiked on a cement boat from Quicavi, where the brujos supposedly have their cave), but I absolutely loved it. Also gorgeous is the national park on the west side of the island. Dalcahue has a cute market, and Isla Quinchao (reached from Dalcahue) has some beautiful churches.

    Pack me in your suitcase…please??

  5. I hate to say this, but I went to Chiloe in 2006 and did not like it. It rained constantly and everyone seemed so depressed. We visited all the churches, saw the stilt houses, and went to a fort that was kind of cool (on Castro I think) but I can´t remember the name. I hope your experience was better than mine.

  7. I have heard all about the island's magic…that's part of the reason I'm so excited to go! People have been telling me about it since I got to Chile 5 years ago.

  9. Thank you so much for all the info Lydia. Someone else actually recommended the same restaurant to me and gave us the exact same description of where it is so I guess that's a must-eat place :)

I do feel like you're right, we'll probably mostly just wander. But I just wanted to make sure I didn't overlook the wonderful usefulness of the well traveled readers of this blog so I thought I'd ask.

And mmm, flavored liquors. LIke the sound of that.

  10. Yay, I like when people say hi when they pass you, I miss that in Santiago! I will totally see if we can get to Mechuque with enough time to spare, sounds awesome. Thanks for all the recommendations!

  11. I'm sorry you didn't have a good experience, I've heard so many good things about Chiloe! I just checked the forecast and fortunately it's not showing rain until thursday. All the rest of the days are supposed to be sunny. Not that that means anything…

  15. Oh, lucky! I loved Chiloe. I think the churches are beautiful, especially some of the kind of hidden ones along the sourthern part of the island. My favorite part though was camping at the Parque Nacional. We hiked about 5 hours in, to the campgrounds and some beautiful little bays (full of gringos and europeans–very few Chileans–because of all the walking–jaja). You probably can't do that in 2 days, but if you get a chance to go back… Being from the Northwest, I like rain and southern Chile is very familiar for me.
