Post by Seba (about our new dog) below, my notes at the end of the post:

Asi es, como algunos de ustedes sabran, tenemos un nuevo perrito, y se llama Cachasa.

That’s right. As some of you know, we have a new puppy, and his name is Machasa.

But what you might not know is how this dog, 100% mutt, came to find his place in our home. What happened is that last week, we were near the Machasa factory, waiting for a friend. We were sitting in the car outside the factory door, when out of the factory across the street, comes a little puppy through the fence — well, I shouldn’t say a puppy, more like a pile of bones with feet. He looked terrible.

So, I started watching, as soon as he came out onto the sidewalk, observing the situation. He would follow anyone who walked by some 50 meters and then go back to the factory. He started eating some rotten fruit that had fallen from a tree and then he sat down to wait again. While we were both waiting for something to happen (the dog and myself) we made eye contact (and yes, it is possible to make eye contact with a dog). He wagged his tale and dared to try and cross the street. In spite of being a mutt, he’s still a puppy, so he didn’t even look before crossing the street (you’ll notice that Chilean mutts know to look both ways before crossing the street). He almost got hit by a car. *Just like his future puppy mother!

He didn’t get down, he just waited a while and then tried again — same end result. So he tried to go back in the factory and the guard kicked him back out through the fence again. Finally, he tried to cross the street one more time. This time I saw that he was about to get hit again so I yelled, “Get out of the way mother trucker, move, move!” Worse yet, he just came to a stop in the middle of the street. Luckily the car stopped and went around. After that, Kyle and I thought, if we leave him here, he dies. So we put him in the car and brought him home (after a few hours of driving around in our trunk).

We brought him to the vet the next day — possible distemper, we had to watch for parvovirus, he was malnourished and his bones hadn’t calcified so his little legs would shake if he stood up for much time on them.

To make a long story short, after a couple vaccinations, a few vitamins, flea removal, anti-parasite medicine and eating chicken breast for the last five days, he’s now doing much better. He’s still skin and bones, but he runs around and plays, sleeps like a baby and even has the energy to try and take Papi’s food from her.

So with no futher ado, I’ll leave you with some pictures of Machasa.

I already love him with all my little heart, but I know we really can’t keep another dog. Trying to figure out our crazy travel plans with one puppy is hard enough. So if anyone knows of a anyone wanting an adorable dog, please contact me. I would be so happy to see him go to a home that will love him and treat him right after his rough start in life.

  3. I want to keep him, but I feel like it's unfair to him. We are already going to be gone from Chile most likely for around 4 months total this year. I just don't know what to do with him.

Speaking of unfair, also to my suegros who dog sit for us! I think it would just be better for him to find a stable family. If you want me to, I will totally bring him to the U.S. with us in May and bring him to you :)

  7. Once he gets fattened up, he's going to be so naughty! Haha, I mean he can barely walk, and he's already stealing shoes. I'll of course keep an eye out for anyone looking for a biggish dog…with that face he should be able to find a home.

  8. Well, if he hasn't found a home, and if we find a house with a fenced in yard in NC (which is our hope and plan!) I'll find someway to convince Oscar. Simon is a really really social pup and he LOVES having other dogs to play with him. He and my parent's puppy literally played all day, and he's not the least bit daunted by big dogs! I also have to admit I'm almost “too good” of a puppy mamma… When researching moving to NC the first thing I looked up was dog parks :) Simon is beyond spoiled… Sigh, if it were up to me we'd have a whole pack… I wish my husband were a little more open to that :)

  9. OMG he's SO CUTE!!! Kyle you are such a sweetheart for doing what you did … not many people would even bother to take the time to make sure he's ok! You are amazing! I heart that you heart doggies! Wish I could take him … but little Obi is coming home tomorrow! I hope someone takes them into his/her home!!!

  10. Ahhh!!! So precious!!! What a kind thing you and Seba did. It's so hard to see all those mistreated dogs out there in Chile roaming the streets with no home and nobody to take care of them and it's great that you did something about it. His little puppy face just kills me!

  11. Wow Kyle, you and I are in the same boat! We rescued two different puppies in mid December. I've managed to adopt one out to someone in Algarrobo, but the other little girl (Georgia) is still with us. She so sweet and much as we'd love to keep her, we already have two dogs we brought with us from Canada. We also like to travel and it's a real pain in the ass arranging care for them when we're gone. Everyone around here keeps saying, well you already have two, what's one more? One more is alot, sadly. My dogs have been together for years now and it actually works out well when we travel in the sense that they keep each other company and are a little less depressed as a result when we leave. They have each other. Poor little Georgia though, she keeps pissing off Voodoo who's the oldest and I think she would do best in a home with a younger dog or children. Anyhow, you can see her pictures on my blog. She's the featured post. I'll be sure to let you know if I hear of anyone looking for a male puppy. You might have better luck than I, as male puppies are far more popular. Even though we've guaranteed to have her sterilized, people still want a boy. People suck :(

  12. This guy is sooo little….I didn't realize he is literally a puppy, wow props to you guys for taking care of him. He is super cute and I hope you can find him a good home. I'll let you know if I hear of anyone who wants a dog. Did the vet say how big he will get??

  13. Cuuuute!! If I were looking for a dog, I'd take him, but I'm not, sorry. I've decided that I hope my future neighbors have a cute dog to play with and take for walks, and then drop off at home afterwards. hahaha.

  14. OMG, that shoe is almost bigger than Machasa. And I have to say this is the first picture of Papito where I think I detect a bit of jealousy in that face! Good luck with your search for a good home for Machasa.

    Comment by kyleracine — February 12, 2010 @ 8:06 am

  21. Yes, it is a hard boat to be in. It's impossible to walk by a dog that is dying, but it's also impossible for us to keep another dog. SIGH I hope we have better luck than you did with your girl dog.

  22. Yeah, he is literally the size of Seba's flip flop, and only weighs about 5 pounds.

  23. Haha, that would be an ideal situation.

  25. Oh he is the CUTEST little guy EVER! I wish you didn't have to let him go! but I do hope you find him a good home. I'd LOVE to take him, but it's not possible at the moment – otherwise I'd be on the first plane to Chile! :-)

  26. That is one very very cute puppy – unfortunately, I am not really in a place to take a puppy no matter HOW MUCH I WANT ONE. And I live in Australia. so there is all that. Good luck finding him a safe and healthy home.
