“You are the typical american girl who never could find love in america and so had to go south of the border to find it. Chilean men treat women like gringos did back in the 1800s. I am sure you never had success with love in america because you are a prude, shy, insecure etc.. and by dating someone and then marrying them didn’t allow these faults to come to the surface. Running to South america can’t erase your issues as much as you put the chilean men on a pedastle. Now to be fair you may have found a nice chilean man but look at tht statistics. Chilean men and machismo allows for a high rate of spousal abuse which is literally ignored and accepted by law enforcement. When the honeymoon is over look out for his hand coming at you when you have kids and he demands that you cook and serve him. The other thing is chilean men are notorius for cheating on theire women so please use protection for your sake.”

I continue to get random weirdo comments, mostly on my old blog. If there is any shred of coherence/rational argument and the commenter isn’t anonymous, I’ll email back. For the most part though, I ignore them. But sometimes they’re too good to ignore. I think I may start posting the funniest ones for blog enjoyment. Like the above. It comes from an old group blog, though any comments made over at the former JMCS no longer show up on these posts.. Since yesterday was our three year wedding anniversary. I guess I should apparently be preparing myself for Seba’s hand to start coming at me any day. Now might be a good time to enroll in a self defense class, or at the very least, sleep with my pepper spray under my pillow.

Actually, when I went back to link to that post, I found another funny comment. The topic of Chilean men is apparently a goldmine.

** IMPORTANT FEEDBACK ** Being an Australian Chilean (a chilean born in chile who grew up in Australia) I feel there is a lot of misconceptions out there..

Firstly, chilean really don’t want to spend their lives with a “gringa” they just want to have a sexual relationship with her (from experience). Chilean men don’t really have a liking of their ways just their different looks (try a blonde).

I have a friend from chile who just arrived in australia about a year ago. He is happy with his chilean-australian girlfriend but wants to try a “gringa” in the same way someone wants to drive a different model car.

We chilean men can never really be happy with a “gringa” because they are generally as dry and critically indifferent as their male counterparts. “gringa” women are generally better at grabbing our attention (being blonde helps) but don’t understand us in the long term. White women are as cool to “hang out with” as a dry leaf branch in death valley.

You are some disillusioned ladies out there..

Oh anonymous internet commenters, how dull our lives would be without you. What are some of the most ridiculous comments you’ve ever gotten on your blog?

  1. Happy anniversary to you and S!

Yeah, you have to be pretty insecure to move across the world, work hard to forge a life for yourself and share the ups and downs of it all with others. Maybe everyone should take a hint from the supremely secure people who prowl the internet in search of anonymous ways to try to tear happy people down.

I got the same “important feedback” post on my blog a while back. At first, all the asterisks made me think I'd won a sweepstakes.

  2. HAOhoAHoHAohAOhOA I see many people in different blogs erase some strange comments, but I think some of them are really funny, like the first one you show xD
    Three year wedding anniversary! congratulations.

  3. HAHAHA i got that comment forwarded to me too by notification. i think its the same guy that was prowling Gus's blog. I have no idea who gus is, but way back in the day someone linked to him and i commented, and this (probably same, cuz the emails got sent to me at the same time) guy was going on and on on this stuff. I replied once but after he started going all paranoid “the government is watching you” on me i didn't really him think worthy of more comment.

its funny i wonder if these people hate chile so much or just love the US so much they are bitter you insulted it and left.

anyway, we'd all better watch out, he's obviously onto us.

  7. OMGGG!!!! I can't decide whether to laugh or get furiously pissed (?¡) … wow…

  8. Wow Wow Wow! It's actually sad the number of people who think the same as the blogger from post one when you mention you have a Latin American boyfriend or fiance. I almost cringe when I tell someone new my fiance is Chilean because they get that pity look in their eye and I can just hear them thinking, “Oh you poor stupid girl…Can't get any attention from the boys here eh? Little do you know he's just using you for citizenship…Have fun screwing up your life!” lol.

  9. Surely these two anonymous commenters couldn't maintain a relationship with a blow-up doll. Where would we be without their gems of wisdom? Buy that pepper spray now, Kyle. Bwahahaha.

    Comment by Katie Alley — February 19, 2010 @ 7:19 am

  10. What a joke. While he's out protecting the interest of us gringas/gringos, maybe he should troll all the websites written by Western men who find “submissive,” “feminine not feminist” mail order wives in East/Southeast Asia, informing them that they are being used for green cards, money, etc.

    Comment by Magnifique — February 19, 2010 @ 9:31 am

  11. HAhaha, I got those comments sent to my email notification. I have been with Rodrigo for 3 years and he hasn't raised his hand to me. And I think if he was just taking me out for a test drive, he would have left me a long time ago…. some people…. I hate when people comment such BS and they can't even put their names behind it. I'm sure the people who left these comments are just bitter because they couldn't keep a grina girl if they tried. :P

    Comment by Shannon — February 19, 2010 @ 9:32 am

  12. That is HILARIOUS. Seriously, insane people never cease to amaze me!

    Comment by thornton12 — February 19, 2010 @ 10:43 am

  13. Those are hilarious! I am going to assume by the nature of their comments that they haven't had a real relationship with a girl of any nationality… I'm guessing they haven't even gotten a “test run.” I have been with my husband for 13 years (8.5 married): he would never hit me, he doesn't even yell or call names and I am fairly certain that I can non-naively say he would never cheat on me.

    Congrats on your anniversary!

  14. Haha, maybe we're going to win another cruise to the Amazon if we respond to this “important feedback.” You never know :)

  15. Thanks Marmo, you know now that it's been three years I guess I better watch out, hahaha!

  16. It could be. It seems like if a rando comments on one of our blogs he then finds them all and goes nuts…too much time on his hands maybe?

I do like to respond to comments, but sometimes they're too out of control to handle.

  26. Oh brother! To your face?! Seriously!? Ouch. Nobody has ever said it to my face but almost everyone I know has admitted to me later that in the beginning they thought Felipe was using me. So I know for a fact that this is what people think when I first tell them about my relationship ha ha!

    Comment by gringagonesouth — February 19, 2010 @ 5:25 pm

  27. hahah people tell us that to our face ALL. THE. TIME. and my boyfriend always jokes “es el amor de mi visa”

    Comment by Lydia D — February 19, 2010 @ 5:50 pm

  28. To the girl who told me's credit — she really had married someone who used her for the visa. He was from Kosovo and they got married, he got the visa and then as soon as it switched into a visa where he no longer had to be married to keep it, he disappeared and she never heard from him again. INSANITY.

  29. Ay dios mio, are these people for real???????? I love that you can find these comments humorous, I just want to punch these idiots and knock some sense into them, haha!

PS Happy early Birthday chica!!! XOXO

    Comment by GlobalButterfly — February 19, 2010 @ 9:30 pm

  30. These made me laugh, especially since when I say “I don't like machismo and piropos” I get men telling me how I know nothing about Chilean culture and should accept the compliment and stop applying my gringa point of view to everything. But apparently it's ok for Chilean men to totally bash their hermanos?

Also, and I say this with no disrespect to either of you, but I think you're more likely to hit Seba than vice versa (not that you ever would!). And then he would probably tell you to stop being crazy and go take a nap with Papi until you apologized.

    Comment by emilyinchile — February 20, 2010 @ 7:02 am

  31. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA. At first I felt a bout of anger rise up in me, then I realize how idiotic these people are.

    Insecure much!??!

I must have been a pretty damn good test drive because O. bought the “car” and hasn't traded it in yet…

    Comment by asuhey — February 20, 2010 @ 7:16 am

  32. Ha ha ha! Lydia that´s hilarious!!! I´m going to have to tell Felipe that one! El amor de mi visa! Ha ha! That´s great!

And poor girl…ouch. That must hurt big time. There´s no doubt that this kind of thing happens quite a bit so it´s easy to see why people would sterotype every girl with a foreign boyfriend as being ¨used¨ but still, I wish it weren´t so…

    Comment by gringagonesouth — February 20, 2010 @ 9:14 am

  33. As crazy as that the post is from the Chileno in Australia, I liked his line, “dry leaf branch in death valley.” LOL! I've got to write that one down. I've also heard the comments/warnings about “green card” or visa marriages and machismo. Luckily, I can say that my Chileno husband (whom I call my red hot Chile pepper) is nothing like that. We have known one another for over 10 years, dated & broke up twice and been married for 3 years and I have no regrets. He's a perfect gentleman, a hard worker and has a heart of gold. I think I'm more likely to hit him than he is to hit me. I'm a bit emotional and get easily excited :-) I'm working on that…

    Comment by Debora — February 20, 2010 @ 10:53 am

  34. No, we have only been married a year and 5 months, but we have been living together for 3 years.

    Comment by Andrea Gonzalez — February 21, 2010 @ 7:05 am

  36. Oh my goodness. Thank goodness you have the brain to just consider them idiotic anonymous commenters. Seriously. :) You're awesome. I must be really boring because I never get any ridiculous comments…better make my posts more interesting! :) xoxo

  38. Some people are just so sad. These people are obviously so fed up with their own sad lives that they look for comfort in the Internet world, and find someone to push down to bring themselves up…

I once knew a girl who LOVED to write mean things to other people online. Whenever she was the slightest bored she went online and searched for people to harass. She especially liked to comment on fat people's blog and tell them how ugly they were. It was horrible to see the satisfaction and happiness she felt by doing this.
Now those who knew her well knew that she was a very very insecure girl who hated others because she hated herself.
I think that 90% of these people writing these comments to you and others are like her..

  40. Hahaha. I had the same commenter– the second one.

Also, my husband, for the record, is a feminist, who supports gay rights, talked freely about discrimination and privilege.

  41. Jajajajaja…

(like its the most abnormal thing in the world, since he did grow up here in Oz) lol he tells them its cause he thinks Chilean women have a slight nutcase-ish side to them when they get upset lol

  45. [...] I was recently talking to my best friend’s about the blogging world and attacks on bloggers from readers and commenters. I’ve definitely been on the receiving end of many a hate email and the occasional obnoxious and/or cruel comment. I tend to ignore them. Don’t get me wrong — they often hurt my heart — but I see very little good that comes from responding.  Unless the comment is hilarious. [...]
