Gift giving around Christmas time is hard for me. I’m not one of those people who is fantastic at picking out the perfect present from that tiny little vintage bookstore or finding just the right thing for a special someone on my list. I’m not a scrooge by any means, it’s just that I’m more of a give when the mood strikes kind of a girl, rather than wait for Christmas. Most of the people I know have everything they will ever need, materially speaking anyways.

But, a few years ago, I was hit with a moment of inspiration — not for Christmas obviously. I wanted to go hard or go home. I was ready to go all out for my mom. I bought her a plane ticket to Chile for her to come and visit me for a week.

I think this was the best gift I ever gave because my mom has always worked so hard and put everybody else first and I just wanted her to be able to put herself first, for once. So she did. She took the time off from work and came down and we had ourselves a might nice little staycation. Of course, we both had our computers and couldn’t disconnect completely from real life. But when my mom came down we got to spend so much quality time with each other. I think that time is the best gift you can give someone. Even better than an expensive plane ticket or anything else you could ever buy at a store. You really never know what could happen tomorrow so taking advantage of every second that you have with your loved ones is so important.
