Seba and I totally shocked ourselves by adoring Richmond, VA. I didn’t think it would be the kind of place we’d like so much, but the city charmed us. It’s beautiful, full of history, and immaculately cared for. At least in all the downtown parts that we saw, there’s no trash on the streets, no graffiti — just a lot of well kept facades that date back to their origin as cotton lofts from back in the day. And did you know that Richmond used to be a huge tobacco town? Well, it might still be. I think Phillip Morris is still there, no?

Granted, part of the reason we enjoyed ourselves so much might have been that we had just come from Grand Rapids, Michigan, where we had only seen the sun once in three weeks. And then we arrived in Richmond and it was gorgeous out every day. All I wanted to do was lay in the grass on the capitol lawn and soak it up. And so we did.

But seriously, who would’ve thought we’d love the Capitol of the Confederacy this much? I’ve live there. I really would.

I don’t know why, but I was very impressed to be standing outside a senator’s office. Even if it wasn’t an impressive office at all.

Look at my Seba. Full of sunshine and love for the camera, as always :)

Everything in Richmond is historic. There are signs everywhere to tell you what things are. Good thing, because I’m not a history buff, especially a Southern U.S. history buff. Most of the names, I’d never even heard before. Well, besides the Thomas Jefferson statue in the Jefferson Hotel. That name I actually knew :)

Ahhhh, suuuuuunnnnnn.

Have you ever been somewhere that blew your mind when you had no expectations for it?

  1. Ok, now I’m going to have to stop and take a look around when I’m driving back from FitBloggin’ in two weeks.

  3. Yes! That’s totally how I felt when I went to Honolulu two weeks ago.

Funny about Richmond–I’m from Tennessee but have never been, and my sister is dating/about to get engaged to a guy from there, and she HATES it and the thought of having to move there someday permanently (but I think it’s more about the people/socialites in the circles in which his family travels and less about the city itself). It looks beautiful through your lens!

  5. Kristen, that is hilarious that your sister hates Richmond! well not really that hilarious if she might end up living there someday. Admittedly we didn’t spend enough time there to know whether or not the people were cool. We only met the people at the wedding and of course they were all super nice because it was a celebration!

Emily, why thank you, F21, my friend! You know I’m cool like that!

  7. Can’t believe we were so close to one another geographically this past weekend :-) I haven’t explored Richmond much at all but glad you liked it.

When I visited Berlin, I had no expectations but I fell in love with it straight away and felt some sort of deep connection to the city. I couldn’t explain it but I’d love to go back and see if that feeling returned!

  8. Yes, El Salvador totally blew my mind (mostly because I was coming off a love affair with Mexico and didn't expect anything out of my trip to El Salvador). Three trips and a total of about three months in-country later, I'm working on planning my fourth.

  9. I hate to say, my experiences in Richmond have not been as pleasant as yours. I used to live in VA beach, maybe and hour to an hour and a half from Richmond. Everytime I went up there it felt very sketchy. I never really felt comfortable there. The outlying areas of Richmond are not nearly as nice.

San Diego blew my mind. Costa rica was incredible, Rome was insane. But I kind of expected that of all those places.

  10. Kyle – random comment but I love you dress. Haha.

I do love the way you’ve captured that town. It really gave off a feeling of Southern towns in the US. :)
