If I were a millionaire, I’d go back to Spain to take more pictures of it before these posts were over and that way the Spain posts would never end. La Sagrada Familia was definitely our favorite tourist activity in Barcelona, but there a lot of other things we enjoyed too — like the Magic Fountain (La Fuente Magica)!

On our way back down from the Botanic Gardens — the point in our never-ending walking journey where we realized there were actually ELEVATORS UP THE HILL that would’ve taken us directly there — we saw a giant fountain. There were signs advertising it’s magicalness and we saw that if we came back the next day there would be a light show! Set with music from the 80′s! How could we pass that up?

So this time, we took the metro to the foot of the hill. From there we met up with Mar, my family’s exchange student. Like I mentioned, she lived with us when she about 14 years old and I was 16. She actually came back again a couple years later. The Hepps are kind of irresistible :) My family has a habit of staying in touch with exchange students. When I was 13 I went to Brazil with my Grandma to meet up with their old exchange student — who by then was like 50 years old and owned a hospital. It was hilarious to see my grandma treat him like he was still her little boy.

And then the elevators up. Woohoo! We’re smart! Kind of.

Behind those four pillars sits the magic fountain. That’s the day view.

I want to say that the four pillars represent some kind of war memorial but I could be wrong.

Cristobal Colon! That’s Cristopher Columbus for you Gringo readers. He’s pointing towards America. By the way — did you know he never set foot on U.S. soil?

I do know that the building behind the Magic Fountain is an art museum.

People came out in droves to see the light show. It was impressive. It was a really nice summer night and everyone was so relaxed, enjoying the music, just having a good time. I loved it. Mar, Seba and I sat up where you can see the man made waterfalls/fountain thingys right above the second one. We had a perfect view. Good conversation that night. Mar told us a lot about Spain that I hadn’t previously known. When we travel it makes me really happy to talk to people that live in the city we’re visiting so I can hear more about their perspectives on what life is really like.

The light show was really cool. We sat through two of them and they were actually two different shows set to two different song lists.

  6. I am completely mesmerized by the last image. I have been to a few light shows and most of them feel more ‘wonky’ than magical. Your photoessay completely disproves that. Thank you for sharing the magic.
