Well first of all, Polka Dot Bride was kind enough to allow me to guest post over there as part of my campaign to book a wedding or two in Australia next year! So check them out. I wrote about why we want to visit the land down under, and I also guest blogged for their honeymoon section about the Chilean Patagonia. I am so grateful to them for supporting me in this little idea of mine.

Secondly, if it’s seemed a bit quiet around here lately, that’s for good reason. While we have been busy photographing lots of weddings and engagement sessions and maternity sessions, that’s not the whole story as to why I’ve been posting a bit less. All my writing juice is getting sucked up by book writing instead. I’ve been talking about this for a million years and I figured it’s about time to get busy, go Nike and just do it.

I’m blogging about this only a few hours after I talked to my mom and said, “I’m writing a book. But don’t tell anyone. I’m too embarrassed.” Because that’s what I do. I blog about my life. I’m still embarrassed about it, but other people aside from my own mother knowing that I’m doing this might inspire me to actually finish this time around. I also decided to inform you all because my friend Carrie left a comment on our last post that said, “I can’t wait until you guys publish a book. That will happen someday, yes?” I think she was referring to a photography book, but I prefer to think of that as a serendipitous moment giving me a sign to announce my writing intentions here.

I was telling her that the last time I decided I was going to write a book, I got about 300 pages done and then got mad and erased it all. Why did I get mad? Don’t remember. Why did that ghost anger cause me to erase more than a year’s worth of work? Really couldn’t tell you. For this fresh start, I’m going to have Seba password protect the pages and not tell me the password so as to save me from myself — an impossible task, I know.

And I have one last announcement but it’s not quite ready to be shared with the world yet, so for now know this — it will help you out with your Christmas shopping. Get excited!

  3. Oh Kyle… No better news with which to start this day! I cannot wait to read your book. I knowwhat you mean about the fear associated with undertaking or publicizing such projects, so I hope you know there are many, many, MANY of us who will cheer you on every step along the way.

    Comment by Roxanne — October 28, 2011 @ 3:30 am

    • I’m glad you understand what I mean about being scared to put it out there Roxanne! But you’re totally right…I think that having made it public also means a bigger support system so that is a HUGE advantage that I had totally underestimated. I already feel energized and way more excited just reading the comments!

  4. There’s nothing embarrassing about writing a book, in fact it is an admirable thing to do. Once it is published you will have done much better than the millions and millions that only talk about doing it but never do.

    Comment by A Kiwi in Chile — October 28, 2011 @ 4:43 am

    • Well that’s why I’m putting it out there, because if I don’t publicize my intent, my guess is that I’ll end up working for another year and then hitting the delete button again :)

  5. Go Kyle Go! Gotta love the crazy people… you know, those who take on a book writing project at the beginning of summer :) xo.

    Comment by Allison — October 28, 2011 @ 5:28 am

    • You hit the nail on the head Allison! I’m definitely crazy, but there’s actually some method to my madness this time…I want to write it during busy season so I can focus on trying to get it published during low season. And I also feel much more creatively inspired as soon as the busy season starts and I’m working all the time so this is a good time to do it. We started shooting this season’s weddings in September and I’ve been working on the book idea since then.

  6. Nothing to be embarrassed about Kyle, sounds like a great project. What’s the book going to be about?

    Also, what’s the secret announcement!?!?!

    Comment by Brian Davis — October 28, 2011 @ 6:32 am

    • The secret announcement is….still a secret. But not a baby, don’t worry. You’ve got that part locked up :)

The book is going to be a memoir about my relationship with Chile. This country and I have had our ups and downs.

  7. That’s awesome, Kyle! I love your writing style! So personable and open, it makes me feel like I know you and have known you for years! What will the book be about?? So curious.x

    Comment by Lacey — October 28, 2011 @ 7:05 am

    • Awww, thank you Lacey, the books that feel the most intimate are my favorite kind to read so I really hope I can write one like that! The book is going to be a memoir about my relationship with this country. My guess is it’s probably going to be more of a humor book than anything else, but surely I’ll have to throw a little soul searching mixed in between too.

  8. Yay for you going to Australia and yay for your writing a book! Fun times and more success ahead for you K-Hepp! I hope I am in OZ when you are and if so, you kids are welcome to bunk with me, hang with me eat with me and/or drink with me. Whatever tickles your fancy! xx

    Comment by Kristy — October 28, 2011 @ 3:16 pm

    • DUH! If we are in Oz while you are in Oz I am 100% taking you up on not just one of those offers, but ALL of those offers!

  9. Awesome Kyle! Can’t wait to read it!

I do hope for a coffee table-esque photo book one of these days, too!

Another money-making possibility to consider during your future brainstorming sessions: a pay-per-question service. You know, for people like me who have LOTS of questions about camera lenses and such. Charge me like $5 per question/advice request. Well worth it. Just sayin’. :)

    Comment by Sherry — October 28, 2011 @ 5:50 pm

    • Haha, but Sherry, you know I love you, I’ll always answer your questions for free :)

  10. wow wow wow, congrats on the book writing, something to definitely be proud of. I am an aussie gringa living in iquique, and moving back to aus in december, and have seen the results of some of your family photo sessions. Fabulous!!!!! I was sitting in the hairdresser today lamenting the fact that we don’t have great natural shots of the 5 of us as a family at play, and now my hubby has already moved back to aus it is way too late :( And I thought to myself, I wonder if I will find a Kyle Hepp in Aus. So, fingers crossed… I can find THE KYLE HEPP in aus next year :) Good luck!!

    Comment by steph — October 28, 2011 @ 6:21 pm

    • Steph, I wish our paths had crossed sooner, I would’ve loved to photograph your family. But hopefully we can still make that happen one of these days! Would be soooo cool to shoot you in Australia! Thanks for the support!

  11. You are a very brave woman Kyle Hepp. And I think that is too heavy and unfair of a burden to put on Seba, to give him the task of saving you from yourself!! Totally not fair to him!

    Comment by Rita — October 28, 2011 @ 8:20 pm

    • I know, it really really is. I expect a lot from that man :)

  13. Kyle, we are so excited about 2 things – firstly, your book! You’re an incredible writer! It would be WRONG not to do it! And secondly, that you will be coming to Australia! Can’t wait to share bbq prawns (shrimp) on the barbie with you guys!!!

    Comment by suzanne — October 29, 2011 @ 5:58 am

    • EEK! Thanks for the encouragement Suz! Hey, if we come to Australia and share bbq prawns on the barbie with you guys maybe you’ll make it into the book :)

  17. Glad to know I’m not the only writer who routinely destroys my own work! I’m so excited to find out what you’re writing about – all the best with it – I’m sure it will be awesome!

    Comment by Andrea — October 29, 2011 @ 5:46 pm

    • It makes me weirdly happy to know that you have destroyed your own stuff as well :) Clearly we both have issues. Maybe that’s why we get along so well.

      Comment by kyle — October 29, 2011 @ 10:34 pm

  18. That is awesome Kyle! I was glad to scan through the comments to find the topic of your book. You are an amazing writer. I think you forgot though, that the first book you wrote was a rainforest edition of The Magic School Bus. I’m pretty sure that you did all of the writing on that book even though technically we were a team. I’m still waiting for that one to be published…

    Good luck to you!

    Comment by Lindsey — October 30, 2011 @ 2:57 pm

    • AHHH, I remember writing that with you!!!!!! Hey, I think we really did a good job, I wish I still had a copy of that somewhere!

      Comment by Kyle — November 2, 2011 @ 1:29 pm

  19. Cannot wait to read the book!! Hoping I get an autographed copy :-) ;-) Way to go, Kyle!!

  20. I’ve been thinking about writing a book. Everyone says I should after what the past 1.5 years of my life have been like, but I don’t know where to begin. What would the angle be? I started once and, like you, I threw it all away in frustration.

    Comment by Sara — October 31, 2011 @ 7:53 am

    • Yeah, I think the key for me has been starting with a pretty specific idea. On one hand, writing about my entire life would be an overwhelming project. But knowing that I want to focus on the Chile-relationship aspect of it makes it mentally easier.

      Comment by Kyle — November 2, 2011 @ 1:31 pm

  21. you know we will all buy it!!! now i can get the kindle version!!!! :)

    Comment by Catalina — October 31, 2011 @ 6:58 pm

    • Haha, whether I self publish or look for a regular publisher, there will HAVE to be a Kindle version!

      Comment by Kyle — November 2, 2011 @ 1:31 pm

  22. I’m working on my Christmas shopping today. You said your secret would help with that. Just trying to push things along. Did it work? hahahahaha Have I mentioned how much I hate suspense? :)

So glad I came back to read the comments about your book. I’m excited to hear that the book will be about your relationship with Chile! I have laughed and cried and cringed and smiled reading all of your adventures and misadventures over the years. Exciting!

    Comment by Sherry — November 1, 2011 @ 4:36 pm

    • It’s coming, it’s coming! I promise! Within the next week and a half.

And thank you so much for your support, I think you will like the book whenever I finish it :)

    Comment by Jeannette — November 2, 2011 @ 1:19 pm

    • I am so excited I want to finish it now! Unfortunately I don’t have time to sit down for a month straight and write all day long but I’m faithfully writing a page a night.
