Being photographed is really important…aaaaand not my favorite thing to do at all.

I don’t like being in front of the camera. Like a lot of people I just generally don’t like how I look, I struggle with being really self conscious, and then, of course, there’s the added bonus that as a photographer I want all the control in my own hands. I do NOT like having the tables turned on me.

However, I love having the photos afterwards. I feel like it’s important to have pictures of life during all the different stages. I know I absolutely love looking back on old photos of my family, me when I was little and even my mom and dad when they were young. It’s cool to think that someday little Ava Boo might see these pictures and think “Damn, Aunt Kyle and Uncle Seba were hotties back in the day!”

And if having pictures taken is important for everybody, I think it’s extra important for photographers, to remind yourself what a big deal it actually is getting in front of the camera. Every time I am photographed I am re-energized with a new-found empathy for my own subjects and I realize just how important the energy of the person taking the picture is in regards to making you feel comfortable.

This past trip home, I had the honor of being photographed by two amazing photographers.

First up was my boudoir session with Kai Heeringa Photography. They are wedding photographers in Grand Rapids, but I wanted a boudoir session and they were game.  You can check out my whole post here on their blog. I’d been thinking about doing a boudoir session for a while but I kept putting it off because I was nervous! Being in so little clothes didn’t really bother me — I actually opened the door to the hotel room in my bra and underwear when Kai and Kayley knocked because I figured I might as well just get it over. But being in front of a camera after not having had the lens turned on me was nerve wracking. Fortunately, aside from being great photographers, Kai and Kayley are some of our best photographer (and real life too!) friends and I knew that they would make me as comfortable. I probably should’ve had champagne for breakfast that day but I forgot to buy some because I was so freaked out. Every pose I would catch myself clenching my teeth or white knuckle gripping the sheets and then Kai or Kayley would say something funny and I’d remember to relax.

Oh, and I should mention, Kayley is a hairstyling genius and she ombre’d it and then did the cool glam do you see in the photos!

Above is my favorite shot from the session. Like I said, you can check out the rest on their blog.

Then, we went to Florida. Like I said, I attended a Fershop – which was pretty mind blowing and probably deserves a whole post of it’s own, though I’m not sure I’ll get to that seeing as how we have sessions/weddings basically every day for the next two weeks straight. I may have mentioned on this blog a time or two that he’s ONLY MY FAVORITE PHOTOGRAPHER ON THE PLANET EARTH. I was, again, insanely nervous for our session, but very excited. I didn’t have time to get my hair and makeup done, and MAN was it windy and humid out so I am basically just a frizzy mess who sweated off all her makeup for the entire session, but the photos still ended up incredible.

It was so nuts for me to see how Fer took the location and worked with it, and the kind of shots he got out of it. The man is mind blowing. Really, the kind of talent makes you want to cry because you’re simultaneously happy that such a brilliant and creative mind could exist, and then sad, because you know it will take a million years for you to ever be even a fraction of as good as he is.

Check out our full session here, on his blog. Below is my favorite shot of the day.

And leave both Kai + Kayley and Fer some love on the posts if you are so inclined. They are so awesome, I’m very appreciative to them for making the getting photographed experience fun, not torturous, and for giving us such great results.

PS. Remember that you can still enter to win a print from this month’s destination: Patagonia. And now you can buy from my new print store for Christmas presents for your friends and family!

Congrats for that awesome body and beautiful face (of course) but I already knew that. So I have just learned about this boudoir photography: stunning! I want to do it so bad…can they hide my leg imperfections and maybe give me a little bit more cleavage? I wonder if I can find someone here to do it…hmmm how to start?… ;)

  9. Now that all of the KH’s have seen each other in their underwear we should just have designated underwear and wine nights. As soon as Seba changes his name to Kebastian Harco he can participate.

  10. Kyle, you look so elegant and sophisticated. I love your smiles too in the end photos on the blog. Okay, now I have to get that boudoir session from you and Seba the next time we can meet up. I am always so nervous about the same things, but Kai made it look effortless.

  14. Loved both sessions in their own ways. And Seba is probably the only man in the world that can pull off that hot pink shirt so well.
