I cannot get enough of Frutillar! I am hoping to drag these posts on and on until we go back there again :)

We weren’t quite sure what to do with our one remaining day but we had heard that the drive to Puerto Octay, through the back roads, was beautiful. Lucky Ash and Leo are just as go with the flow as Seba and I so we all jumped in the rental car and headed out for an adventure.

We didn’t get more than a mile from the hotel in Frutillar before stopping for a picture. Everything down there looks like a postcard.

What blue skied day is complete without a cheerful cemetery? I’ve never been in such a happy graveyard! When we pulled over, we saw a little padlock on the door and thought we might not be able to go in. But this is the South of Chile! There are no rules! It was unlocked so we stopped for a few pictures.

In Patagonia they build graveyards up on hills with the best views for the dead, who are buried in little housetype structures to protect them from the elements. Even though none of these graves were in the little houses, I wonder if they were following the same tradition of giving those who have passed a spot on a scenic overlook.

As this region of Chile is big for agricultural, everywhere we went looked very pastoral and peaceful.

Driving through one town even tinier than Puerto Octay, we paused to stroll a bit more with our cameras. We passed outside this Vinegar factory. It wasn’t abandoned per say, it looked kept-up and not scary…but there certainly wasn’t any activity going on.

Then we continued on our merry little way until we made it to Puerto Octay where I tried my hand and photographing some of the locals.

This fellow was very friendly…and very drunk. Apparently there’s nothing else to do in town or so he says.

Then we stumbled across these guys, who were also enjoying a noontime snack of beer. Maybe the first guy was right.

Believe it or not, this is a posed picture. They all look pretty natural don’t they? I was impressed. Maybe they have a future in modeling.

  1. Noon time snack of beer…you’d have to be in foreign country to see that :) Very interesting view on how they bury their dead. Regardless I’d rather be there than in cold, gray, colorless Utah.
P.S Got my postcard. And I couldn’t be any happier! Thank you friend!
