I did my 2012 wedding photography recap so I figured it was also appropriate to post a 2012 travel recap.

2012 was personally tumultuous, yes, but an amazing year, nonetheless. Especially when it came to globetrotting. I feel almost ridiculous being able to say that I saw so much beauty around the world all in the span of 12 short months. It’s really not fair how amazing my life is. I mean…I spent a large portion of June VISITING A CHOCOLATE FACTORY IN ECUADOR. Seriously. That’s my life. That’s my life! I don’t know how I got so lucky.

The above slideshow has photos from every country I hit up in 2012:

  • Venezuela
  • Bolivia
  • Peru
  • Ecuador
  • Brazil
  • United States
  • England
  • Finland
  • Estonia
  • China
  • Spain

Brazil, Spain, England, Peru and the U.S., obviously, were all repeats for me so that means in total I visited 6 new countries last year. My goal is to finish visiting every country in all of South America by the time I’m 30. Mostly because I’m worried that I may no longer be living in South America after the age of 30 and so those destinations would become vastly more inconvenient for me.

You may have seen a few familiar faces pop up in that video…such as the infamous Ashley Ambirge, or, you know, PRESIDENT BARACK OBAMA. Cause, yeah, I met him last year. No, for real. One of my incredible couples invited me to accompany them to a meet a greet. We shook hands and he looked me in the eyes and thanked me sincerely when I told him I thought he was a great president.

Meeting President Obama was one of many highlights of my year. My other big travel moments in 2012 were taking two trips that had me scared shitless. Conquering my fears felt so good! I traveled across the Bolivian altiplano…and loved it. Even though I’d been terrified to go. And China ended up being my favorite destination of 2012, even though I was so overwhelmed and nervous that when I got there I sat in the Starbucks and cried before leaving the airport. Finally making it to Machu Picchu, a dream destination of mine, was another moment this year where I just sat and gave thanks for the goodness that is my life. It was a magical place with an incredible energy and I’ll never forget it.

In the slideshow you’ll see a few pictures from Spain, which I haven’t even gotten around to blogging yet! Even though that trip was all the way back in September! That was an insanely fun journey through Madrid, Sevilla and Grenada with my mom, culminating in photographing a wedding in Spanish wine country with my good friend Sjoerd Booij, then staying in 500 Euro a night hotel suite and having a dance party with Sjoerd, my mom and Val and Adam, who happened to be in Barcelona at the same time! AMAZEBALLS!

Though, I have to say, out of all of these things, winner of best travel blog of 2012 HAS to be Dancing on the Bolivian Altiplano. I still can’t believe that I got 5 complete strangers to dance like fools to Rihanna with me in the Middle of Nowhere, Bolivia.

This is my life. I still love it. I am incredibly appreciative. Ash is here with me in Miami right now. She bought a plane ticket on Monday to fly in on Tuesday and we’re going to the Bahamas on Saturday. My dad laughed when I told him she was randomly coming last minute to travel with me again. He shook his head and said, “You girls have no idea what it’s like to live in the real world. And I hope you never do.”

I hope so too. Screw the real world. Kyle’s world is a pretty great place to be :)

Amazing year Kyle. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t just a little jealous. That being said, you deserve to have such crazy awesome adventures. I’m glad our paths got to cross a couple times in 2012, hopefully they will again in 2013.

  7. Renee says:

Normally when I read stuff like this, I get super envious. (Even with some of my good friends as much as I hate to admit!) But when it’s from you, I find it so inspiring! I’m honestly happy for you because I feel that you really work hard and deserve it. Keep on being awesome, Kyle!

  8. Brendan says:

You don’t know how you got to be so lucky? I’m pretty sure it’s because you’ve worked so hard to be in a place where luck can find you. I have to believe that or else the world just really doesn’t make any sense.

  9. Madhu Nair says:

    Hi Kyle,

  1. […] 2012 was a year of personal discovery and conquering fears. I traveled to incredible places and then got back to Chile and threw myself headfirst into work, turned around, blinked and we were a quarter of the way through 2013 with me having written barely a travel post! […]
